The continuing growth of regulatory compliance demands in the healthcare industry—and the heightened risk that accompanies it—is placing an enormous strain on auditing resources in most organizations. Like many large health systems operating in today’s lean climate, CommonSpirit Health, the largest Catholic health system and second-largest nonprofit hospital chain in the United States, continuously seeks the most efficient and effective ways to elevate compliance practices and optimize revenue capture.
A Hayes client since 2016, CommonSpirit Health had long appreciated the advantages of MDaudit Professional, a server-based solution that streamlined auditing processes through automation and analytics. Thus, when Hayes launched MDaudit Enterprise, the health system saw an opportunity to further elevate its revenue integrity practices by transitioning to the new cloud-based, risk-intelligent auditing solution. Specifically, the move would enable staff to automate workflows, continuously monitor risk and detect anomalies in a single platform with enterprise-wide views.
Change management presented an early challenge, particularly given that many CommonSpirit Health team members were very satisfied with MDaudit Professional. Consequently, establishing the appeal of MDaudit Enterprise was the first step in the transition process. The Hayes team held a demo and Q&A session with CommonSpirit Health’s core steering committee and demonstrated the intuitive nature of the solution along with its robust monitoring capabilities and advanced functionality. This was followed up with webinars and training sessions to keep everyone in the loop. Bi-weekly meetings and impromptu phone calls also took place between the Hayes team and the core implementation group throughout the seven-month roll-out.
CommonSpirit Health is a large, complex organization, making it nearly impossible to roll out new technology without experiencing some challenges along the way. For example, because organization policies set Internet Explorer as the default browser, staff had to get used to copying the MDaudit Enterprise link into Google Chrome to access the solution. And the steering committee had to rethink the setup of audit groups across its many regions and markets due to variances with the former version. However, the Hayes implementation team ensured CommonSpirit Health overcame all those minor bumps to realize the new vision it had set for its auditing practice.
Since the implementation of MDaudit Enterprise, a bird’s eye view of end-to-end audit processes reflect greater productivity, an improved user experience and minimal down time. The cloud-based environment has streamlined access across CommonSpirit Health’s 15 different billing platforms, including the previously time-consuming task of aggregating monthly data.
The health system’s revenue integrity team is also working smarter by auditing more services per provider. The organization’s minimum expectation is 10 services per provider during an audit. Some markets have increased that to 20 or 30 services, allowing CommonSpirit Health to get more done without the added expense of hiring and training more employees.
